Our school is your best source for professional, valuable and educational childcare at a low cost service.

J&M'S RAGGEDY AN PRESCHOOL LLC is a small home-based preschool/daycare centrally located in the Budlong Woods /Lincoln Square area. Being so near to Swedish Covenant Hospital, Northeastern Illinois University and many other cultural resources nearby, including a very large park less than 2 blocks away, walking field trips will be a regular treat for our young preschoolers. Established in September 2008, and online as of February 2009, we have built a collection of comprehensive knowledge and experience with early childhood and are able to provide the most valuable, experienced and innovative creative curriculum based school environment for your children, but with the comforts and warmth of home.

SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY AND MISSION
The mission of  Raggedy Ann Preschool is to provide a nurturing, safe, fun and enriching environment for children to grow and learn.  The focus of the childcare is to encourage sharing, caring, cooperation, imagination and development of positive self esteem through play and learning.  The various activities planned throughout the day target the development of large and small motor skills while stimulating the intellectual, social and emotional growth of the child.
Our philosophy is a little bit of  Piaget, Ericksson, and Maria Montessori  all wrapped together and put to the test.  We believe in play through learning.  We also believe in teacher directed and facilitated play.  We believe in getting down on the floor and building those blocks, or jumping in the sandbox  or dipping in the water table. We encourage exploration and creativity and want to challenge your childs’ natural curiosities…Children develop their sensory motor skills and coordination when using their five senses. Children with better social skills and emotional health thrive academically and are more likely to avoid high-risk behaviors as adolescents.  Physical release is vital for their emotional well-being.   When we let them direct their play,  we’re not just giving them a break from the curriculum; play makes the curriculum relevant.  In fact, studies show that overuse of didactic teaching can inhibit child-initiated learning and demoralize young children’s self-confidence and motivation to learn. When they are engaged and interested, they  have a natural drive and develop critical thinking and leadership skills. Children get “play ideas” from other children’s experiences. The older children teach younger ones.  When there are no expected results, a child can feel confident and free to explore a range of options. He can focus, have a sense of independency and learn in the process. Play, most of the time will be pure joy. Sometimes he’ll come out with “boo boos,” questions and frustrations. There might be some tears, but certainly there will be lots of laughter and worthy learning experiences. As a Chinese proverb says: “Tell me, I will forget. Show me, I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand.” So, let the children play!

ABOUT ME
My name is Mari Scott and  I am a director and teacher in a small home daycare setting. I am a stay at home mom who had a dream of starting a school, but wanted to stay home with my newborn daughter.   On Monday, March 2, 2009  we opened our doors in a huge over 2000 sq. ft 4 bedroom 3 bathroom house in Budlong woods/ Lincoln Square.  We have a great space!   There is a park less than 2 blocks away as well!  Outside I have a gated yard with a privacy fence, a sandbox, play equipment and a little picnic table.  Inside the house, I have a dedicated infant room of 5 babies /2 teachers and a dedicated toddler preschool room of 8 (max 10)  with me and an assistant teacher. The infant room has 5 pack and plays, a diaper changing table, all the age appropriate toys, cds, ipod stereo, noise machines, 2 jumpers, mirrors, 2 swings, 1 hammock, 1 bumbo chair, 2 highchairs, mirrors, 3 boppys, and a large room size plush carpet that encourages floor play and tummy time.  In the infant room, I have a refridgerator and bottle warmer available for my parents to store their formula convenient for drop offs.  The toddler/preschool room is the larger room on the first floor of the house.  It is directly connected to my kitchen and a small bathroom on the first floor. The toddler/preschool is a safe hazard free /toddler proof zone on the 1st floor that is also convenient for my parents drop off/pickups.  This room has an art area with an easel, a water/sand table area, a carpet area for our circle story/calendar time (it is also the carpet area for our big blocks and large motor toys),  an area for the cots, an area for our kitchen/dramatic play area, a snack area where our tables will be (great for smaller toys and fine motor play) room, a quiet area for books, and a diaper changing table area.    I'm excited!  I'm going to have all the walls covered with art and even hanging from the ceiling with clothesline pins.

STAFF
Every staff member knows each child and gives them the individual attention they deserve. We work closely with parents in making a smooth, easy transition from the familiar surroundings of home to the nurturing atmosphere of our preschool. We have an open door policy that encourages parents to visit their child and to participate in school activities. I also encourage building outside work relationships with our staff for after school, weekend or closed school days to fulfill the need for babysitting.

ILLNESS POLICY
Please advise the preschool prior to 7:00 am if a child will not be attending daycare due to illness.
*Children who have a fever of 100.3 and above, as by the state regulations, will be sent home.  Children with volatile vomiting will also be sent home.
Parents agree that a child who is ill (ie. infection, diarrhea, communicable disease, or any other type of illness that may be passed on to others, with the exception of the common cold) will be kept at home to protect the well-being of my family and other children in my care. The parents further agree should a child become ill while in care, that immediate arrangements will be made to remove the child from the day care. Children will not be allowed to return to daycare until they have been symptom free for at least hours. In some cases a Doctor's note may be necessary.
Please respect my illness policy. If a child is not well enough to go outside to play or attend school, they are not well enough to attend daycare.
